I would like to ask for prayer about a christian youth group which i have been involved in since I started following Jesus and am now a leader in. I have recently been told that i cant come to the youth group because of the way I dress up till now I have just fitted in because that was expected but over the last year or so I have been dressing more and more the way I like to dress (gothic) they now have decided that this is unsuitable and i recived a very painful text telling me i couldnt come with black eyeliner on ect. because its "not setting a good example". Im now confused as some of the people there are people I love and now I dont know whether they just liked the me I put forward to be acceptable or actualy saw past that. I need to know Gods will in this I dont know whether i should go back or not or whether i should just try and fit the mould and ignore the way i like to dress.

hello...Roddy..well this seems to be a problem alot..unfortunately .because people seem to judge by appearance and not look at the heart..as to whether you should conform or not we will keep you in prayer on that...well know you have brothers and sisters here that think its great you wear eye liner...Angel

brother I feel for you. I think you should be able to express your identity. I have a mowhawk and Ive been told that I need to cut it to get a real job. I made a deal with God that I would if I found a job that pays more than 10 bux. Well that hasnt happened so maybe God wants me to keep my mowhawk. But lets thin of it differently. If my mowhawk caused others to miss out who I really am I would let it go. I dont know how influential your position is at your church but if your getting through to anyone than I would just find another time to wear the eyeliner. Think about this. Ive been prayin about going to nursing homes to hang out and talk to some elderlies(theres alot you can learn form someone that has lived a long time)so Im not going to wear my mowhawk up and wear a hat. I wouldnt have said this 5 years ago but dissplaying the inside is more important to me than the outside. I dont think about it as selling out or anything. I pretend that Im infiltrading the systom with a disquise. Sometimes we do need to blend so we can plant our spiritual Jesus bombs on the least expectant.

Hi thanks for that
I think what really got me is that this youthgroup is supposed to be a place where you can be yourself. I have decided that im going to miss this months weekend because i think if i did go i would react angrily and the kids dont deserve that. Im going to talk to the person who is in charge at some point during the next mont and find out what the issues are with it and why she didnt say somthing to me at the weekend and waited three weeks before bringing it up. I dont think the issue is with the eyeliner in question but rather that i dont fit the mould that they would like.

Just think about this. What if sometimes we are supposed to be indisguise?? What if God wants us to dress like them to win them?? Like we are on a mission. And we have to infiltrate the system. The devil wears sheeps clothing. lol lets be sheep and wear wolves clothing. The devil wont know who to go after. And in his confusion we will win some of the lost. I love to pretend. (im really not pretending. Ill put on some dockers to win someone. Ive heard people say they would get a mowhawk to win "me" I tell them honestly no dont. Some people just shouldnt cross cultures lol) One sunday or whenever you go to church just be brave. dont wear eyeliner or whatever. wear something "safe" and watch the confusion. Its funny. Ive done this to get a job and after i get the job they find out I love the Ramones and I have tattoos that say Jesus. thats what really messes them up

I hope the group isn't one run by an old school and church friend of mine Simon Bailey? - He's now a youth worker in Scotland somewhere.

If so - let me know and I'll have words!! ;)

As you can see I'm in the UK and trying to get a few things started for Christian goths here.

Man looks at the outward appearance but God looks at the heart. There are a lot of misconstrued ideas in the church today.

Have you ever been to Greenbelt? I'm hoping to try and get along there in the summer to help run the Goth Eucharist.

Tell your youth leader that if they like they can chat to me about Goth culture and christianity. I'm currently working on this Ulfilas Christian Goth project with full backing of the Church of England. In fact it's a project that started in response to some stuff that Birmingham cathedral want to do.

There are some good resources on the christiangoth.com website in regards to challenges to churches regarding goth.

In fact Dr Raven, who's also on the forums here has written some articles that are featured on the site there. (He's great)

Tomorrow I'm meeting with a couple here in Birmingham diocese who are goths... Paul is a vicar. :)

Ulfilas exists to bring the love and acceptance of Christ to people from the various underground subcultures (particularly Goth and Emo) in Birmingham, UK. An initiative in association with B1Church.net and Birmingham cathedral.

But before you rush away in horror...

We are aware that many in the sub-cultures have been deeply hurt by the insensitive, judgemental and hypocritical actions of many churches and christians.

We are trying our best to undo some of that damage (even though we do make mistakes 'cause we're human!) and hopefully with your help we'll succeed.

We have no interest in judging people or forcing anything down anyone's throats. We are here for you and we accept you just as you are, just as Jesus does.

It doesn't matter whether you profess to be a follower of Christ or not...EVERYONE IS VERY WELCOME!
